Resistors have either 4 or 5 colored bands showing their value. These can be decoded using the chart below. For example, a resistor with 4 bands where the coding is brown (1), black (0), red (× 102 or 100) and gold (5%) has a resistance of
(10 Ω × 100) ± 5% = 1000 Ω ± 50 Ω
Sometimes it can be hard to see these color values on the resistors and a multimeter is used to check them.
