We are creating an exciting and educational outreach program designed to introduce middle school students to the world of particle accelerators through hands-on LEGO® model building. This program offers 6th to 8th graders a unique opportunity to explore the design and operation of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) while sparking their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The three-day curriculum begins with an introduction to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), and the fundamentals of particle accelerators. On the second day, students will engage in building LEGO® models of key SNS components, bringing complex concepts to life in a fun and interactive way. The final day focuses on the diverse careers that contribute to the groundbreaking science at SNS, helping students connect STEM learning to real-world opportunities.
We are also working to establish a special STEM visit day at SNS for local program participants. This experience will allow students to tour the facility, see real components that inspired their models, and meet the scientists, engineers, and technicians who make SNS research possible.
Program Components:
Middle School Participation: Yearly in May after TCAP testing
LEGO® kits are provided to each participating middle school from donations.
Each school will be assigned a specific section of the SNS accelerator for assembly.
Students will learn about:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Spallation Neutron Source, and Accelerator
Engineering principles behind the SNS while building their designated portion.
The many career opportunities for all levels of education and skills. Scientists, Engineers, Technicians, Craft, Administrative, Human Resources, Finance, Food Service, Management, Leadership, and others.
STEM Day at ORNL: after in-class curriculum
Students will tour the facility and see real examples of the LEGO® components they assembled.
The students will meet with staff who will describe their roles in the operation of the SNS.
Students will add their LEGO® sections to the full SNS model during the event.
Completed SNS LEGO® models will be returned to schools for display.
