The ring injection region is where hydrogen ions accelerated in the linac pass through a diamond foil thinner than a human hair. The foil strips away two electrons, leaving only the protons to be steered into the ring. This is the most complex operation in the accelerator. A special configuration of magnets guides the beam to within a fraction of a millimeter to make sure the protons enter the ring correctly.
